A barrier under constant mineral stress tolerates retinol poorly, reacts to acids that should be fine, and marks more readily after every breakout. What to Do About It

1. Change how you cleanse

Switch to a gentle, low foaming, sulfate free cleanser. Sulfates react most strongly with hard water minerals to form the residue film, so a low foaming cleanser reduces the problem substantially. Keep water lukewarm rather than hot, and keep the wash brief.

2. Do a final rinse with filtered water

This is the highest impact change most people can make immediately. Keep a bottle of filtered or boiled and cooled water and use it for the final rinse after cleansing. It removes the mineral residue that regular rinsing leaves behind, and it costs almost nothing.

3. Rebuild the barrier with ceramides

Hard water strips the lipid layer daily, so it needs replacing daily. A ceramide moisturiser applied to damp skin within a minute of washing is the core defence.
